Attention Stance: feet point forward, shoulder width apart, hands in a fist by the knot of the belt.

Horse Stance: Step out to the left as if riding a horse. Legs should be twice the width of shoulders, toes pointed straightforward, pelvic forward, shoulders back and head lifted, hands are cocked at the waist.

Fighting stance from attention stance step back. Stance is angled.

Punch is executed with rear hand. Fist is tight, striking with the first 2 knuckles. Pivot the hip come up on the back toes.

Back fist: Striking with the back part of the fist with lead hand. Striking with the back of knuckles.

Side Kick: Cock lead leg up and across the body, strike out with the heel. Draw the leg back in with a quick snap

Self Defense

Check high: From a fighting stance, take back hand and swiftly move across the shoulder, tilting head out of the way. Staying in a sideways position.

Check Low: From a fighting stance, take lead hand and sweep across the side of the body.

Wrist grab: Single wrist grab same side. Grab your own hand step back an pull either upwards or downwards depending on the position of thumb of the attackers hand.

Double Wrist Grab: Flip hands palm up, step back at the same time pull arms up, bending at the elbow..(like fixing your hair)

Cross Wrist Grab: Snake your hand to the outside grab attackers wrist, twist so elbow is point toward the outside , strike and back off.

1 hand Choke hold: .   Turn sideways use the hand that is on the inside of the body, take index and middle finger push into the Adams Apple

Cat Stance: From a fighting stance, drag lead led about 10 inches from the other foot. Come up on the ball of the foot. Weight distribution is 10/90

Snap Kick: From a cat stance, bring lead leg up and toe curled, point knee to target and snap the leg out and back.

Round House Kick : (fighting stance) This kick is executed from the lead leg. Draw your leg up. Knee is pointing towards the target. Snap the leg out and back, then step back into the fight stance

Knife Hand Strike: (fighting stance) Take lead hand , stretch it out and open fist, fingers tight, snap hand out and back.

Front Kick: (fighting stance) Pivot towards opp. Hands cover frontal area, bring back leg up, point knee to target snap kick out and back.

Self Defense
Inward Block: from a horse stance, bring right hand about shoulder level, strike across the body, do the same with the left hand, cocking the arm back to the waist after execution

Front Choke hold:
 (American)  Drive fingers into the eyes, pop ears, grab aggressor and strike groin two times, step around aggressor and clothesline.

Back Bear Hug free: Step out, torque body and strike back with elbow , double groin shot step around and clothesline

Back Bear hug pinned: Step out, knife hand to the groin, step around attacker, slide elbow up and strike sternum with hammer fist.

Double Round House: (fighting stance) This kick is executed from the lead leg. Draw your leg up. Knee is pointing towards the target. Snap the leg out and back, raise knee higher and execute another kick .

Back Ridge Hand: punch hands out immediately open hand tuck thumb in, swing arm. The back foot pivots to add power.

Side Thrust: (fighting stance) take back leg cross behind lead leg, lift lead leg up and execute side kick.

Rear Kick: (fighting stance) Look back raise back leg to the front and snap the kick back


Self Defense
Outward Block: (horse stance) hands cocked bring right hand up and towards the left shoulder , swing to the right and return to waist. Left side.

Front Bear Hug Pinned: Strike kidney with knife hand. Grab, double groin shot step around to the back and sweep

Front Bear Hug Free: Eye dart, pop ears, double groin shot and sweep

Rear hand choke: Twist cross behind executes knife hand, go under attackers arm execute ridge hand

Rear choke hold: Drop chin into elbow, place hands at elbow pull down. Stomp on foot, grab wrist with same hand, step out, eye dart, double groin shot and step around sweep.

Forward Stance: From the fighting stance turn back and lock the back leg, bend forward leg.

Lead Ridge Hand.: Punch out with lead hand open hand and tuck thumb down. Strike inward. Pivot lead heal towards target for more power.

Jump Front Kick: (fighting stance) bring back leg comes up, but kick is done with lead leg. Hands are in front of face for protection.

Hook Kick: (fighting stance.) Throw a sidekick at a 45 degrees angle, bend at the knee, striking with the heel of the foot.

Back Leg Round house: (fighting stance) Pivot front foot, bring back leg around and throw a round house kick.

Self Defense
Extended Block: from a horse stance, hands cocked. Starting with right hand, arm goes to top left side across to top right hand is extended, fist is facing out

Inward defense: Defense against forward right punch. From a natural stance step forward execute an inward block, turn block into knife hand strike to neck, cat stance and execute a kick.

Arm Lock A: Same time grab opp. hand and step to the side. Holding opp hand , eye dart, double groin shot, step around and throw.

Arm Lock B. attacker is holding one arm back and above the elbow of the other hand. Step leg back between their leg. Shoot hand out, bring back for elbow strike, groin shot. Grab opp hand, take two steps out and snap kick.

Double Arm Lock: Grab opp. hands. Rear kick. Holding on to opp hands, front cross, elbow strike, lock arm, release hand, hold down and elbow strike ,knee strike.

Upper block (horse stance) right side. Bring right hand to center for cover then strike above, keeping arm t an angle, wrist is straight.

Outward defense (against left punch) from a natural stance step forward with right foot, extended outward, hammer fist to the nose, knife hand strike, snap kick, cross out.

Lapel Grab: Pin hand step back break elbow,  sweep arm off, knife hand strike to neck. Close the gab elbow strike to face and jaw strike. Pivot into a close kneel, hammer fist and rear kick

Side shoulder Grab: pin hand, palm strike to elbow, middle knuckle fist to arm pit, sweep arm, knife hand strike.

Back Shoulder Grab: Cross back, extended outward defense, punch sternum, punch face, cat stance snap kick Front

Shoulder Grab: Step behind attacker’s leg, circle elbow up over attacker’s arm, driving down. Forward bow, double heel palm to ribs and chin

Crescent Kick (fighting Stance) throw a front kick in an angle outside the body, snap it up and around

Turning Hook Kick: (fighting stance) Turn heel towards target turn and execute hook kick

Reverse Crescent Kick: (fighting stance) take back leg, cross over opposite knee bring leg around in a half circular motion.

Self Defense:
Down Block: (horse stance) right side, bring hand to left shoulder and block down. Turn fist up and return to cocked position. Left side the same.

Back Thrust A: a push from behind step off center line, turn towards opp. execute elbow strike down, eye dart, elbow strike up , hammer fist and out. Cross out

Back Thrust B step off center line turn , execute a hammer fist an then a rear kick., cross out

Over Head Strike: Step forward , parry inward block, upper block , knife hand strike to neck and knife hand strike to throat.

The Phoenix (front grab/punch attack) inward block up from under attackers arm, front snap kick, circle elbow and clear arm, elbow, heel palm, claw

  • Gichin Funakoshi a karate instructor from Okinawa, is recognized as the Father of Karate
  • Robert Trias started the first commercial karate school in Phoenix, Arizona, in1946

Lock Flows.

1.         Opponent grabs label, peel thumb, place your hand at the back of theirs and press towards them. 

2.        Rotate hand and grab wrist, guide arm down into an arm bar.

3.        Snake arm around opponents arm and grab your own arm. Come up and step around opponent.

Five Swords: step forward inward defense, knife hand, eye dart, punch, small step back, face claw, knife hand down to neck, knife hand up to throat. Rear kick.

Sweeping arm hook Circle hands from the outside to inside to break hold, middle knuckle fist Cross forearm throat strike, double eye dart.

Spear of  Jade

Double parry grab, push opponent. down striking with a front kick and eye dart, check and punch

q       Art form of karate is called Katas.  Kata are pre-arranged techniques against an imaginary opponent.

q       Tension, breathing and execution are the most important aspects of Kata.

q       Without Kata there is no karate.

Double opp bear hug pinned: front kick, step out lift elbows up, groin shot, elbow strike up , pivot and hammer to sternum. Front kick and kick to opp on ground

Double opp bear hug free in front. Execute inward block and front kick. Elbow strike down, pivot hammer fist to sternum.

Double Opp at side: Knife hand strike. Check eye scrape, knife hand strike pivot and down block, inward block front kick to first opp and rear kick to back opp.

4  Turn hand palm up place thumbs on the back of writ and bend forward.  Elbow is up

5. Bend elbow, bend arm and bring it close to the body

6. Release from the 5 position turn palm towards you and pull  ring and middle finger apart while pushing back

  • Style: In karate it refers to the type of karate one is taking for example, Shotokan Tae kwon do, Kenpo, American Style…
  • Jhoon Rhee is the father of American Tae kwon do.
  • Tae Kwon do is a Korean martial art. It is a combination of forms and the fighting art. It is known for their kicking techniques.
  • Spinning Kicks: used mainly in Asian Martial arts. They a e especially used in tae kwon do and other form of kung-fu. Spinning Kicks are power full due to the force of the kick added by the spin.

Axe Kick. (Fighting stance) bring back leg in a circular motion at center point bring foot down. Striking with heel.

Monkey foot. (Fighting stance) Bring back leg up and strike down. Used to strike back of knee or heel…strike with bottom of the foot.

Whipping knife edge. (Fighting stance) Pivot front legs so knee is turned toward opp bring back leg in a sweeping motion. Made for knee strike

Flying side kick (Fighting stance) start walking with back leg . Take 3 steps pivot and side kick with back leg.

Self Defense

Side kick, punch attack: rear twist, outside downward parry, step out into a horse stance double parry, step around to simultaneously punch and back fist, grab shoulder, back fist high, eye hook, grab wrist, sweep

Front Kick Punch attack: Steps back, downward block, execute vertical outward block and reverse punch. Simultaneously snap kick and punch. Plant forward and punch..

Round house kick with 2 punches: Step forward to neutral bow and universal block (rear arm high) simultaneous upward block/hand sword strike, shift, upward block/ hand sword strike.

Forward  Stance
Down Block

Circle of Mace:  double parry, right hook punch, knee strike, back leg round house kick to thigh and round house kick to stomach

Double headed Serpent. Step forward to a neutral bow. Double high low fist strike. Widen stance and strike arm at the forearm and elbow. Clear arms. Forward bow eye jab, neutral bow punch.

Springing Limbs Step into a neutral bow with a universal block. Hook foot pull and step back, discard foot step forward executing a back fist strike , claw , front snap kick step back and strike up with back fist.

Double Punch Attack. Parry the punch inward and step to forward bow in the same direction( crossing opponents arm) cat stance, same hand parries outward, grab , pull and front snap kick.

Two man attack (Chinese Junk) Front punch and rear shoulder grab. Inward block Front snap kick to groin rear low hammer fist.. same time. Step back. back fist strike to head. Grab head and knee strike. Front cross. roundhouse kick to front opp and rear cross rear kick to back opp.

Full nelson lock Strike back with punch, drop elbows to break hold, pin arm execute elbow strike and rear kick
Ground defense. On the floor. On side in guard position, to leg is protecting bottom leg. Opp. rushes in side kick come on to knee and rear kick get up and run. (double kick when he comes back towards you..)

 up.gif (119 bytes)   Kata is the art form of the martial arts.  The forms are used as a method of training.  When working on kata you are fighting and imaginary opponent.  Keep this in mind  and your katas will be strong, techniques and balance will also improve. 

 

H-Form one On “ready”, look to the left then straight.

  1. Looking to the left, bring left foot to right and chamber.
  2. Turn 90 degrees left and execute a left forward stance and down block
  3. Lunge into a forward stance and punch. Chamber look over right shoulder
  4. Turn 180 degrees into right forward stance and down block
  5. Lunge into a forward stance and punch. Chamber look to the front
  6. Turn 90 degrees to the front execute left forward stance and down block
  7. Lunge and right punch
  8. Lunge and left punch
  9. Lunge and right punch and kia. Chamber with right arm across body. Look right.
  10. Turn 270degrees to the right execute a left forward stance and down block
  11. Lunge and punch
  12. Turn 180 degrees into a right forward stance and down block

  14. Turn 90 degrees to the back execute a left forward stance.

    On this kata the arm that is punching goes to shoulder the other the other arm goes across the body.
    Except on the 270 turns then the punching arm comes across the body and the other arm comes to shoulder.
    Kia is a spirited yell
